An Amazon Best Book of the Month: Romance“Surprising and emotionally tense, this paranormal romance is sure to entertain.” ―Publishers Weekly“[Hoover’s] first foray into paranormal romance does not disappoint. Peppered with elements of mystery, psychological thriller, and contemporary romance, the novel explores questions about how quickly true love can develop, as well as the conflicts that can imperil even the strongest connections…fast-paced and engaging…A unique story of transcendent love.” ―Kirkus Reviews“The love between Leeds and Willow has a very appealing, slow build, while the many plot turns will keep readers guessing through to the shocking resolution.” ―Booklist“Hoover blends thrills, fantasy, and romance into one captivating story.” ―Bookish“Feel free to send Hoover your increased electric bill because you’re going to be keeping the lights on late to stay up and read this one.” ―E! Online“[A] beautiful spine-chilling novel.” ―Her Campus“[A] thrilling paranormal romance.” ―Buzzfeed“You should read this book if you like: Romance with paranormal echoes, gentle thriller-type elements, mysteries, dubious B&B vacations, plot twists, big reveals, true love…” ―Goodreads“Hoover brings her trademark poignancy and addictive prose to the novel, and the bulk of the plot is based in real tragedies and emotions enough that even the more fantastical elements feel real.” ―BookReporter About the Author Colleen Hoover is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of several novels, including the bestselling women’s fiction novel It Ends with Us and the bestselling psychological thriller Verity. My brain hurts. A lot. And I THINK in a good way. It would be easy to assign this a rating based on the success of the romance in this (hint: it would NOT be favorable), but that’s really, really not what this is. It’s psychological, paranormal, and boundary-pushing. The quality of the writing is definitely there, and the journey is all kinds of crazy. I can honestly say that the storyline is like nothing I’ve ever read before, and while there were times when I was adamant that I was hating it… it’s ultimately a very engrossing, uncomfortable, and unpredictable read. The story follows Leeds and Layla, two people who meet and feel an instant spark between them. After a few sex-filled months together, their lust seems to have simmered into love, and things are looking up for these young lovers. But when an incident sends their lives into a tailspin, Leeds isn’t sure how to get back what they lost. Suddenly everything between them is different, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to find the woman he fell for. And that’s just the start of his spiral out of love and out of control. The romance reader in me struggled with this book so, SO much. It both is and isn’t a romance. Yes, love is at the foundation of the story, but it’s centered on the psychological/paranormal elements, and messes with your mind in a big way. Hoover pushes the reader to the limit on what they find acceptable in a relationship, with everything from a love triangle to cheating to a hero who honestly is not all that likable – and more. I think I found it to be more fascinating than enjoyable, but I very much wanted to find out what happened next. Everyone is going to have a different response to this story, but it’s one that you won’t soon forget. So, in the end, I think it’s very successful in being an engaging, intricately planned read. I was lucky enough to receive an early copy via NetGalley (then purchased it for my collection), and am voluntarily leaving a review of this brain-bending story.
I don’t know what to do with this one. On one hand, CoHo’s writing is on point (as always) in this book. On the other hand, I just can’t with the story…This book is beyond different from any CoHo book you’ll ever read. I love that she keeps testing her boundaries and dipping her toes in areas we never thought she would. This “ghost” story is definitely one I never pictured her writing. With that being said, it’s hard to reconcile the story and characters, at least for me.The story itself is just weird. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad weird. But it’s weird, and it had me scratching my head throughout the whole book. It flows well. I didn’t have a hard time grasping what was going on, except when I wasn’t supposed to. The mystery of the mystery in this one was just too far fetched for me.The characters…. Let me just say, I despised the main character completely from start to finish. He just dug himself deeper and deeper throughout the whole book. For me, there was no redeeming him. He’s creepy. He’s despicable. I couldn’t like him at all. I know I wasn’t supposed to like him, but CoHO tried to redeem him and it didn’t work for me.That leads me to the ending. It was the only way the book could end on a positive note, however it didn’t work. It was rushed and completely unbelievable. I saw it coming, but it just didn’t work. I think, for me, this is a book where it didn’t really call for the HEA we come to know and love from this author.Like I said before, the book is extremely well written. This one just wasn’t one for me. There were too many things that didn’t speak to me. I really want to love this one, but I just can’t. I will give CoHo props for that though. I haven’t stopped thinking about this book for days.
I hated this book.Until I didn’t.Colleen Hoover is an auto-buy author for me. I know whenever I pick up one of her books I am in for a treat! So when I started reading Layla…. I was surprised how much I wasn’t enjoying it fully. I felt protective of Layla, and felt really uncomfortable with the relationship forming between Leeds and Willow. Now I still enjoyed it up to this point, I liked her writing and how immersed in the story I was, but there was just a heaviness in my heart as I read. I was truly upset for Layla, and unhappy with the way things were moving, I felt betrayed on behalf of Layla and felt the weight of the morality that Leeds should have felt.Then…. everything changed. With one simple realization that Randall shared with us, and everything corrected itself. Everything made sense. Everything felt right, and that heaviness evaporated. Every word from chapter 22 onward I devoured, connecting the pieces along with our characters and all 81% of the book that came before, felt right. Every sentence prior now made me smile and nod with approval.I went through a lot of emotions in this book and I am happy with every single one of them. LOVED THIS!
NO SPOILERSThe writing is on point, as usual for this author. The story was just too ridiculous. No way does the twist justify the behavior of the male main character. Overall, it’s worth the read but don’t have very high expectations. A funny snippet I read that I can’t get out of my head-“I also made her a glass of wine, so I place that on the nightstand”That made me laugh because I pictured the character furiously stomping grapes in the kitchen to make said glass of wine.
Wow, I don’t even know where to start.. I read this in two days, burnt my pizza because I was so focused on reading this! This is something I don’t normally read but it’s written by Colleen so I had to read it! It is such an amazing book with so many twists, I didn’t think paranormal romantic novel would get me so focused on finishing a book to find out what happened at the end. The ending made me so happy! It was written so beautifully and now I can’t wait for her next book! Thank you for writing this!
Paranormal romance is not really my thing but if I were to read it this would be the type of story I would read. Afterlife and the in between. I really enjoyed this story but I think what broke it up for me was the time line going backwards in time then back to Present day.Layla and Leeds were good together and their love transcending time was beautiful. The moment you find your soulmate you know. Life and death cannot separate true love.I also feel that more time was needed to spent on Leeds life prior to Layla for the reader to feel the true affect of the story. I think with this element factored in the story would’ve had more impact.
I felt ever so brave reading this past few nights before bed, I don’t do “paranormal” well I do now! !So even if you don’t think this book is for you, it is, everyone needs to read this it really will draw you in.Fantastic story line, took me through the emotions (oh I was so angry with Leeds) kept me on edge right to the end, even though I actually felt scared to read the end at one point because I knew my heart was going to pound.Thank you Colleen
I usually love Colleen Hoover’s books. They are some of my favourite romances. This book i just couldn’t love. It made me feel icky and I wish i hadn’t read the whole thing.Leeds our main character is a self absorbed jerk who doesn’t deserve Layla anyway. They meet at Layla’s sisters wedding and he plays in the wedding band. He notices her straight away and their romance starts from there.Layla seemed like a free spirit and too good for him. She didn’t care what people thought of her and enjoyed life. She genuinely loved Leeds and would do anything for him.A dramatic event happens which changes the story for the rest of the book. I hated it from this moment. Leeds becomes so manipulative and abusive to who he thinks is Layla and starts using her to get to Willow the ghost in the house. The ending was redeeming as in it makes it less bad.I just really hated this book and I hope she doesn’t do anything like this again.
I have read and loved all of Colleens books. They always have a twist and this book was no exception. To say I didn’t see that coming would be a total understatement.I don’t give spoilers. Read the book that’s why it was written1 click now you may freak out but you will not be disappointed
