  • This book was portrayed as a “thriller “. Physically harming women and children is not thrilling to me at all. Way to violent
  • I should know by now not to buy into flashy headings for a book on Amazon. Anyway, Katherine and John live with their twins in a good neighbourhood. One morning, Gladys (a neighbour) notices that the twins are quiet and didn’t go out to school. John and Katherine appear to have had a fight and John screeched off in the car. A delivery guy tried to deliver a pc but Katherine refused to accept it. The story takes place in the space of a day and I wasn’t blown away by the “twist”.
  • This was a very tedious read for me. I felt like there was WAY too much useless back story for the characters. It was cool how all the characters linked together. Logan is by far my favorite character. Then Katherine and Gladys and Lou.Idk why the character in the beginning was even in the book. Very pointless. It was ok I guess. I skipped through like 80% of it because it was just stuff I didn’t need to see how the story tied in together. 🤷‍♀️
  • This is the first book I’ve read by this author. It was a quick and easy read. The suspense was steady and ramped up near the end. The ending was satisfying.A heavily-tattooed ex-con, Logan Clarkson, 32, has turned his life around after a 3-year stint in prison, thanks to his wife, Debbie, a maternity ward nurse, and her non-judgmental and welcoming parents, Paul and Ruth. Debbie’s brother, Mack, gives Logan a job as a delivery man. He’s not as quick to trust Logan as his sister and parents are.On a hot day in Sydney, Australia, Logan attempts to deliver a new PC to Katherine West, but she refuses to open the door to sign for it. He can’t leave it without her signature. He tries to work with her, but she’s adamant about not opening the door. Logan drives away puzzled, but can’t let it go. He begins to wonder if there was something going on in that house and if Katherine needed help. He shares his concern with his wife and boss, but neither seem to think it’s a big deal.Logan’s younger sister, Maddie, 25, has been assaulted and is in the hospital in Melbourne. Logan can’t get a flight out til that evening, but wants to beat her loser boyfriend Patrick to a pulp! He’s the prime suspect in her attack and the news reports he’s believed to have fled to Sydney. Logan receives a text “You’re next” and believes it came from Patrick.Logan continues to worry about Katherine West in need of help and decides to go back. Nosy neighbor, Gladys, who lives across the street and has been worried all morning about the family, tries to run him off after seeing his tattoos, until he shares his concerns with her. She’s an elderly lady who takes care of her husband, Lou, who suffers from dementia. Logan tells her to call the police and breaks down the gate and goes in through the unlocked laundry room door after they hear a scream and a gunshot. Logan is shocked by what he sees. Katherine and her 5-year-old twins, George, and Sophie, are being held hostage at gunpoint. The police take their sweet time and don’t show up or do anything til more gunshots are made.———————————————————From the blurb:Sometimes, the most perfect families are hiding the most terrible secrets. • …but to what end? This is a rare book that starts in medias res—latin and means, in the middle of things. In this case, even past the middle of things. I think it is rare to attempt this, because it’s hard to fill pages when you’ve started in the middle, and you need to have a very strong idea of how to do it.In this case, the author does it by what to me was endless repetitive inner turmoil from the characters. Which is not to say there wasn’t good reason for that turmoil, but simply that the author says it through her characters in the same way, over and over again. And while she had set up a very on the edge of your seat situation, for me I found myself turning pages in a bad way—skimming instead of reading because there was nothing new being said. The reward of either writing or reading something that is in medias res is that you’re dropped right into what most writers take awhile to build up to. And that’s great if you’re a person who struggles with getting into a book unless you’re provided with BIG STUFF from the get go. It’s not great if the price you pay is a lot of repetitive filler that makes up for where the beginning might have been.
  • I couldn’t finish this book. Too detailed and tedious. I’m sure many will like this book, but I pass on this author.
  • The basic story is good, and had it not been stretched past my brwaking point I’d have upped it to three stars. Attempts to place readers in the minds of criminals, victims & bystanders are much too drawn out. This book would have benefited from more aggressive editing. 👎
  • Just wow! The Family Across the Street is a mind blowing psychological thriller that kept me on the edge. Seriously nerve wracking page after page with a twist so shocking I probably won’t believe you if you say you figured it out. This story takes place in just one day. One. Terrifying. Day. I loved the style of Ms. Trope’s writing. Excellent character development had me thoroughly invested in them and the outcome. I really felt as if I was experiencing this event first hand. The fear was palpable. This is one of my three favorite Psychological Thriller/Suspense books of the year. It’s dark, it’s disturbing, it’s sad and that twist at the end….whoa. But this story could happen, you’re kidding yourself if you think it couldn’t, perhaps it has. I did also see though, and would be remiss if I failed to mention it… The deep love of a Mother, the way a person can turn their life around if someone believes in them and hope Woven amidst the pain and sorrow. If you enjoy taking a walk on the dark side of the human psyche via a well developed plot/story you will enjoy this book. Congratulations to Nicole Trope for masterfully writing this exceptional book! Bravo!
  • I’m joining the minority here. I found this book incredibly slow and repetitive to the point of being tedious. The storyline is told by three characters. However, it’s as if all three are stuck as to what different they can add- hence the repetition. It goes on and on and on…….It’s a pity as the basis of the storyline is clever in as much as there are two themes going on, seemingly unrelated and the twist at the end, for me, was unexpected.I wouldn’t recommend the book. For me most of the narrative was boring; getting nowhere.
  • I have never read a Nicole Trope book I haven’t loved! The kind of books you cannot out down -even if you are desperate for a pee! Can’t wait for the next one. Gail
  • “She opened her arms and I showed her the gun. I could have made a different choice. I could have stepped into those arms and changed my life.”Something is very wrong at 24 Hogarth Street, yet the two people who spot the air of menace and danger have a history with the police and so will they be taken seriously.Gladys stares at her neighbour’s house, where there is no sign of movement and, the closed blinds look strangely ominous and secretive. Gladys instinctively knows something is wrong, but she has contacted the police 12 times this year already and now they see her as an interfering neighbour.Logan, a reformer criminal and delivery driver seeks to deliver a computer to the house where Katherine lives with her husband John and five-year-old twins. Yet he has encountered nothing but obstacles in his desire to help whoever the woman inside the house is, and by the time he finds out if something is or is not going on, because she will not open the door, “… he could be back in jail just for daring to exist after a prison sentence”The story is interspersed with feelings from the man holding Katherine and her two children at gun point. He is going to kill her and will not spare the children, if need be, but it is clear he is harbouring a lot of pain and hurt and believes it may be necessary “…. to blow up everything around you just to prove you’ve been hurt”, because one day you “… realise that the love of your life no longer thinks you’re the love of her life” but really this man is a resentful rage machine and he is prepared to punish her. This was a pleasant read from the beginning and then the gear changed in the second part of the book, the suspense was at a different level, the anticipation was palatable and when I read through the plot and the twist, I almost wanted to go back to the beginning of the book to grasp what it was I had missed in the first place. A great read and highly recommended.
  • The Family Across The Street is a gripping standalone thriller by Nicole Trope and one that I found difficult to put down once I’d started it.Set in Sydney, Australia on one of the hottest days of the year, the story begins with a bang (literally) as gunshots are heard from one of the quiet residential houses. Something dreadful is happening behind the door of the Wests house where Katherine and John live with their 5 year old twins. With multiple narrators, the reader is taken on a fast-paced journey retracing the events that led to the gunshot. Katherine – the devoted mother of twins, trying to stay alive and keep her children safe during this situation, Logan – an innocent passerby who is trying to stay on the right side of the law, but feels compelled to help and Gladys – the nosy neighbour who knows something is going on next door and is determined to find out what.I raced through this book, loving each and every character and chapter, my heart in my throat as the tragedy slowly unfolds. As a mother, my heart ached for Katherine, determined to protect her children at whatever cost. Getting to know Gladys was wonderful once her layers had been peeled back and everyone should have a nosy neighbour like her. However, my favourite character had to be Logan, the delivery driver, who finds himself drawn back to the house convinced someone is in trouble.Overall, this is a great story, full of believable and fascinating characters and I am delighted when my amateur armchair detective skills let me down, because I really hadn’t worked out what or why had led to this tragedy.
  • Something odd seems to be happening behind the front door of an affluent Sydney house.Delivery driver Logan senses it, but he’s got some problems of his own. Next door neighbour Gladys suspects it too, but she already has the police on speed dial, so can she be trusted? This is a great story of suspense, set amongst the backdrop of an Aussie heatwave.
