USA TODAY BESTSELLERTessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who’s cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town… where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong. As seen on E!Online, PopSugar, CNN, EliteDaily, Vulture, Buzzfeed, Bustle, the Nerd Daily, PARADE, LA Magazine, Country Living, USA Today, and more!Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar… in Washington.Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

“A romantic comedy delight. If you loved Schitt’s Creek, It Happened One Summer will be your absolute jam.” — Christina Lauren”I put my entire life on hold the moment I opened IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER. I read it in one long, luxurious sitting, reading each page twice, not wanting to miss a moment, and dreading The End. I knew I was reading one of my new favorite books, and I will reread it for years to come, whenever I need a dose of small-town coziness and hard-bodied sea captains. Tessa disarms you with a laugh, heats things up past boiling, and then puts a squeeze inside your heart. The tenderness, vulnerability and heat I am always guaranteed with a Tessa Bailey book are the reasons she is one of my all-time favorite authors.”  — Sally Thorne”Tessa Bailey writes pure magic! It Happened One Summer has everything you could want in a rom-com—heartwarming romance, laugh-out-loud humor, and scorching hot chemistry between the lovable socialite and sexy ship captain. I absolutely loved it!” — Alexis Daria, bestselling author of You Had Me at Hola”With her singular talent for writing romantic chemistry that is both sparkling sweet and explosively sexy, Tessa Bailey once again delivers—It Happened One Summer is everything I want in a modern romance, with two complicated, appealing leads, a setting that feels lived-in and also fresh, and storytelling you want to sink into even as you can’t stop turning pages. The total package from one of the genre’s very best.” — Kate Clayborn, author of Love at First”Fans of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ will love the premise of Bailey’s latest work… [a] sexy, drama-filled love story. ‘It Happened One Summer’ is another great beach read. Plus, laying out in the sun is a perfect excuse for the blush-inducing scenes scattered throughout.”  — USA Today”Schitt’s Creek fans, this is the romance read for you.” — PopSugar (Best Books of July)”Her voice feels as fresh and contemporary as a Netflix rom-com…  Bailey writes banter and rom-com scenarios with aplomb, but for those who like their romance on the spicier side, she’s also the Michelangelo of dirty talk. She wields filth like Da Vinci does a paintbrush, and there’s a lot to be said for an author who can fill such exchanges with all the requisite heat, enthusiastic consent, and yes, even humor, of such a scenario without veering into corny territory.”   — Entertainment Weekly”Bailey strikes rom-com gold in this outstanding tale… [She] is bound to earn new followers with love scenes hot enough to boil water and a hilariously naïve Schitt’s Creek-inspired protagonist who is clearly out of her depth.” — Booklist (starred review)”Bailey delivers on her usual trifecta of sharp banter, instant chemistry, and high-heat sex scenes, but they are coupled with intense soul-searching for both Piper and Brendan… Another winning romance from an author at the top of her game.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“When you read a book by Bailey, there are two things you can always count on: sexy, rapid-fire dialogue and scorching love scenes…” — BookPage.com”This fish-out-of-water story features quirky characters in a charming working-class small town and a steamy, feel-good romance between opposites. Schitt’s Creek fans who just wanted to see Alexis get her happy ending will flock to this title.” — Library Journal”Steamy, sexy and fun, you’ll want to soar through these pages.” — New York Post About the Author #1 New York Times Bestselling author Tessa Bailey can solve all problems except for her own, so she focuses those efforts on stubborn, fictional blue collar men and loyal, lovable heroines. • This book is essentially Shitt’s Creek fan fiction. The heroine is based on the Alexis character in that show. Alexis is the airhead daughter in the wealthy Rose family from NYC. The family lost all their money and ended up in the tiny backwater town of Schitt’s Creek. It’s an archetypal “fish out of water” story. It’s hilarious. But Alexis is actually the least compelling of all the characters. In this book, the Alexis character is Piper Bellinger, the rather worthless stepdaughter of a wealthy Academy Award winning Hollywood producer. She is more of a modern day Paris Hilton, an insufferable social media influencer who is famous for being famous. It’s tough to get past the first few chapters because Piper is so insufferable. After Piper’s arrest, her stepfather sends her to Westport in the Pacific Northwest. It’s not Schitt’s Creek. It’s way nicer. This is still a “fish out of water” story, almost literally because she meets Brendan, a sea captain. They are opposites, they fall in love, and Piper comes to terms with her shallow self-absorbed past. Her transformation is much like Alexis Rose.Unfortunately, there was never a moment when I actually cared about Piper. She never evolves into more than a fan fiction version of Alexis. I’ve read all of Tessa Bailey’s books and I’m afraid this is not a very good one. I’m not sure why her book prices have more than doubled. In this case, it is not worth it,
  • I was so excited to pre-order this book, but found myself really disappointed. It took me a couple days to pinpoint exactly why this book wasn’t sticking with me and I realized it’s because I don’t find myself liking or relating to either Piper or Brendan. Although the author tries to give Piper some redeeming qualities, it didn’t feel truly genuine; her character was so immature. And while Brendan was *more* likeable than Piper, I couldn’t get into his burly, manly-man attitude. Their relationship felt purely physical and didn’t go much deeper than that. It bothered me that Brendan fell for Piper right away – there was no build-up to their relationship and of course they had sex on their first date. I really wanted to like this book so it was a major disappointment for me.
  • You know that feeling you get when you are so in love with a book that you finish it in a day? This is my experience with this phenomenal read. I feel absolutely gobsmacked in the feels, and this may just be one of my favorites this year! I’ve never read Tessa Bailey before, and man do I need to fix that! This was pure joy that you could hold in your hands, and the audio—😘😘.Brendan and Piper’s journey was delicious. I’m so inLove with this sea captain I can see why Piper didn’t stand a chance. I believe this is my first fisherman hero ever!! So freakin perfect! A widower of seven years?! He didn’t know what hit him when Piper came to town. I loved seeing her transformation from flighty party girl socialite to someone that learned the value of money, hard work and what real love is.“What he felt for Piper turned him into a young man in the throes of his first infatuation, while also calling on the deepest roots of his maturity.”Once Brendan was finally able to take off his ring, and put it away this growly, possessive beast of a man was released and if he didn’t ring all my bells, and whistles making me squirm I don’t know what did. He. Was. Hot 🥵Grumpy fisherman and a sunshine girl. Yes, please! I need so much more!!!
  • Utter perfection from page one. I laughed, I sobbed, I clutched my chest, and I read so many parts out loud to Permanent Roommate I think they know the entire book! Also – is Tessa Bailey the only author I trust to write a spoiled little rich girl that I don’t hate? I think so.Piper is endearing from page one. Her struggle to find value in herself and to move forward as an adult woman is amazing and truly something every woman I know has gone through. Who am I? Why do I let other’s value of my body and self have so much power? And that storyline is never sidelined for the romance. She doesn’t change for Brendon she changes for herself and finds him along the way. Brendon is a grunty, sweety with a filthy mouth and a heck of a beard. I truly enjoyed watching him realize as wild as Piper was? At least she wasn’t stagnant like he was. Their communication is amazing, their chemistry is off the charts and my heart ached – ACHEDDDDDD – when they were struggling in the third act. I think my favorite part though was the discussion of being present in your life. For Piper that meant not immortalizing everything for the internet and for Brendon that meant not living his life on repeat.Stars: Five starsSteam: Level five steamTropes: grumpy/ sunshine, fish out of water, small town, widower hero, beards, slow burn, competence kinkFor Fans Of: Schitt’s Creek – obvs.Subgenre: contemporary romanceCW/ TW: mentions of death of a spouse/ parent
  • **2 Stars**+Possible spoilers in this review+Honestly it kinda pains me to rate this lower. I was really loving this book. I was smiling so much. It was sweet and sexy and adorable and had its funny & charming moments. It’s the first time in a long time my kindle battery died because I was glued to it too much to go upstairs to put it on charge. This book was absolutely gonna be a 5 star read for me and that made me excited then it started to dwindle. Look, first of all what soured it for me early on and then returned later on was something that is possibly spoilery so… [ Brendan is a widow but the way he talks of his deceased wife is such an easy out. “We didn’t love each other. I didn’t have intense feelings like I do for you.” Like why can’t it be both? He wears a wedding ring for someone long after they are gone, and yet he is so dismissive about her. It’s a cheap tactic in my opinion.] It probably won’t bother many other people but it bothers me when this is done. The other thing that just ruined it for me is that Tessa Bailey really fell back on some weird norms of masculinity and femininity, I think this is showcased in what is perceived as man = grunty, big and possessive and woman = small, dainty and reliant on him. There was “a real man!” comment or two. But that’s a whole other conversation, but the gendering didn’t stop. There was masculine back muscles there were “he’s so male/ smells so male.” There was a “feminine message” and yes I spelled that right. A feminine chair. Etc etcThen there were lines like:“It was like a movie poster, with the male lead curling his big, hunky body over the swooning, feminine lady and taking his fill.”“folds of her femininity,”“Looking at her across the table with rare male vulnerability,”I’m not trying to mean I’m really not, I really like Tessa Bailey and her writing but this was too much and at some point it starts to feel like a point is being made but what?? And why??I had to skim from 70% on because the things I mentioned ruined it for me. And I loved Piper and glad she got her HEA. I absolutely loved her relationship with her sister, honestly some of my fave moments. And yes Piper and Brendan are this lovely mismatch together that works so well. In the end though it feels like Piper gave up herself so she can be someone that Brendan gets to protect. It’s a pity because this book had feelings of pure joy, I was genuinely having a great time reading this! I loved Piper because I loved Alexis Rose’s character and growth in Schitts creek but I’d go in with a expectation of very loosely based on Alexis because the growth with Alexis is long and this is naturally a little more sped up where Piper is concerned. Also if Alexis ended up with more of a Mutt type than a Ted type. And if you’re expecting a more diverse set of characters, this book is very hetero-normative. I do have to say there’s extra layers of depth in this book that I wasn’t expecting especially with Piper and her family’s past, that added extra emotion to the book.I wanted to love this and was loving it but it fell apart for me which suuuucks.
  • 4.5 starsThe plot line in one line: After being arrested, “it girl” Piper is banished to her pokey little birth town where she meets the gorgeous but grumpy young fisherman Brendan who – despite his best efforts not to – develops the hots and a heart for her.The good and the bad: So, turns out fishermen are hawt. And grumpy. And big-hearted, passionate and very good in bed! Brendan was certainly “catch of the day” in this book.I wasn’t expecting to like a vacuous, social media star but Tessa Bailey wrote Piper really well – yes the heroine was a bit clueless, but she had a heart of gold and was really just lacking confidence (the real stuff, no the false front she puts on for social media). The sexual tension between them was zinging! And when they finally get to the good stuff, it’s off-the-Richter-scale hot. Oh, and touch taboo. I loved how Brendan knew exactly what he wanted, and what would make Piper pop, and he delivered every time – as was described in detail.I liked how there was an initial clash between the two, but then Brendan soon realised how much he liked Piper and went in pursuit of her – seeing through her faux confidence. It was perfect. It didn’t need to be more than that – just them falling in love and becoming better, more fulfilled people as a result. But then… sigh… the Bailey wrote in the typical, last-minute twist of drama right toward the end and it took the shine off the story because what happens between Brendan and Piper is so out of character for them as a couple and as individuals – it just didn’t make sense. It wasn’t necessary – the book was going great as it was. Though it was a bit contrived, it didn’t ruin what was otherwise a really, massively, superbly enjoyable romance.I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series – about Piper’s sister Hannah and Brendan’s skipper, Fox.
  • So, hands up, a little confession… when I saw the illustrated cover initially I thought maaaaybe this wouldn’t be quite as good as Tessa’s usual books. I thought maybe it would be a little ‘softer’ for lack of a better word?! Tessa to me is everything in how she writes. She is my one click, drop everything and read right now author and I am embarrassed to say I was a little worried this might have changed that. Well I can hand on heart say – I’ll eat my hat, over and over and over again. The different cover changes absolutely NOTHING! This book was everything! The captain was a big, burly, swoonworthy dirty talking LI, very much what I’ve come to love and expect from Tessa. Piper was a loving, spirited but lost woman who grew throughout the book, by herself and with the help of Brendan, Hannah and the town. I loved the small town vibe, getting to know the locals – seeing their story.. but what I really loved is them. My gosh I feel like I was swooning over every single page! My heart was taken out on a journey as if it was stuck on a boat at a stormy sea, and I’ll happily ride those waves. Loved everything about this. Definitely not disappointed in the least, and will for sure be rereading. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted as many passages as I have in this book!
  • @tessabaileyisanauthor was a new to me author last year… thanks to bookstagram! Our TBRs just seem to get bigger and bigger the more we get to know you guys. I was really looking forward to this after loving Tessa’s Hot and Hammered series. The story follows “it” girl influencer Piper on her journey back to her parent’s seaside home town where she meets the rugged sea captain Brendan. At first I found it really difficult to get on with Piper I actually didn’t like her much at all. She acted spoiled and as if everything and everyone was beneath her i.e. the law?! Eventually though I started to warm to her throughout what became her redemption story and I loved the arc her character took to find who she truly is and what really matters to herThe story is told in a dual POV and I really enjoyed this dynamic between Piper and Brendan. I felt like Brendan almost didn’t know what to do with her but in the end his fast and true nature tamed her. Both characters are polar opposites so if you love the enemies to romance trope you’ll enjoy this!
  • I came across this on TikTok and thought I’d give it a read, and I’m so pleased I did. I really enjoyed it! It is an easy read and very easy to get lost in.Piper is a ‘it’ girl who is sent back to her roots after her partying ways become too much for her stepfather to cope with. She hasn’t done anything for herself in forever and so it is quite a shock when she and her sister, who comes along for moral support, have to fend for themselves. After living her life for likes and follows on social media, it’s hard to be her true self. Enter Brendon, a local boat captain who has a no nonsense, routine driven life with no knowledge of social media.Read it. Enjoy it.
