CHICAGO, SOMETIME—Two people meet in the armory of the Art Institute by chance. Prior to their encounter, he is a doctoral student who manages his destructive thoughts with compulsive calculations about time travel; she is a bipolar counterfeit artist undergoing court-ordered psychotherapy. After their meeting, those things do not change. Everything else, however, is slightly different. Both obsessive, eccentric personalities, Aldo Damiani and Charlotte Regan struggle to be without each other from the moment they meet. The truth—that he is a clinically depressed, anti-social theoretician and she is a manipulative liar with a history of self-sabotage—means the deeper they fall in love, the more troubling their reliance on each other becomes. An intimate study of time and space, ALONE WITH YOU IN THE ETHER is a fantasy writer’s magicless glimpse into the nature of love, what it means to be unwell, and how to face the fractures of yourself and still love as if you’re not broken.

Alone With You In The Ether has captivated me in a way that no romance novel has before. It is beautiful, literary, philosophical, magical without being fantastical, romantic, and intimate. It feels like baring a part of your soul to another, it conveys the intimacy that comes with a conversation with someone who doesn’t simply listen to what you’re saying because listening is the easy part. It conveys the feeling of the intimacy that comes with someone who engages with what you’re saying no matter how little they understand what you’re talking about simply because they find it- you interesting. It conveys the feeling of letting someone into your space, and allow them to get to know you- not the façade you might put up, but the real and the messy, even if it’s done inadvertently because they see you, see through you.Alone With You In The Ether is one of the best romances I’ve read in a long time and I will continue to think about it for a long time. It’s a truly underrated book that I want to recommend to everyone I know. It’s a book that made me think deeply about love, life, time, and art. It’s a literary romance in the best sense of the word and because it is a romance novel, there is a happy ending, or as happy as it could be given the personalities of the characters. But it is a happy ending.I really do highly recommend this book. It’s a lovingly told love story with two flawed, but deeply fascinating characters at its center and a message that just because you have issues doesn’t mean you can’t love or you don’t deserve love. It’s literary, philosophical, intellectual, and romantic. No other book has left such an impact on me. No other book made me reread after I finished it. It quickly became my favorite book and it surprised me in such a good way that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully articulate.
Sometimes when fantasy writers focus on the mundane, they flourish. More and more lately it seems I find myself in character driven worlds that are absolutely devastating (in a good way). Sometimes we’re told characters have fallen in love, but that doesn’t necessarily come through the dialogue or actions of the story. With Regan and Aldo, I felt it with my entire being. This is an instance where I’ll be getting this book in paperback after having read it simply because it NEEDS to be on my shelf.I recently read The Atlas Six and really enjoyed how much time was spent developing the characters, and Alone with You in the Ether likewise showcases Blake’s skill in this area. This is one of those books that I didn’t want to end; there’s no need for a sequel, but I absolutely love the characters and want to revisit them and this specific instance of their lives. Much like a painting captures a specific moment or feeling, this book and these characters exist perfectly in the finite time we see of them.I’ve recently purchased a few more of this author’s works and can’t wait to get lost in them. She’s quickly becoming a new favorite.
Tears are rolling down my face because it was so easy to find a fracture of myself in both Regan and Aldo.A few things you will find carved on my tombstone when I meet my inevitable end: (spoiler warning)- That I could study you for a lifetime, carrying all of your peculiarities and discretions in the webs of my spidery palms, and still feel empty-handed.- “You can’t fix me,” she whispered to him, her mouth tracing his neck. Do you understand, do you know what you hold in your hands, do you know how readily it breaks? “I don’t see anything to fix,” he said.- “She does burn me, she ignites me, you’re right. But it’s different, they’re different things.” He was thinking more than he was saying, unsure what was even coming out of his mouth. Science without faith is crippled, Masso, and life without it is soulless. She is my hope and for that she is dangerous, unequivocally, but she is also alive, unreservedly. It took this long for me to finally understand.I wish I could say more and do more than regurgitate Olivier’s words to you, but something about experiencing this book is profoundly personal and intimate. My brain has rooted this book and implanted it so deep in my subconscious. Needless to say, I will carry Aldo and Regan and perfect imperfections through my time on earth.
I loved everything. I related so well to her, but that was far from the only reason I fell in love with this book. The choice of words? Astounding. Just the pure gift this author has to publish this book, is extremely evident. The story was beautiful. The book is beautiful. She is beautiful. He is beautiful. The way their minds work? Absolutely gorgeous. This book will be reread over and over and will keep a special place on my headboard. Even though I’ve read it, it is the kind of book you can read a million times and never get sick of. Plus, every time you read it, you recognize more things than you did the time before that. Please please read this book. My life is completely changed after reading it, and my purse will always be a little bit heavier knowing this book will always be on me.
Lovely book. Beautifully written story (and i’m assuming self published maybe ?), so all the more respect to Blake. However I’m such a nitpicker and it’s bugging me while reading that i’m so painfully aware the text is printed wonky on the right side page at the start of the book (page 7). I was thinking of rating a star lower because of this but honestly it really isn’t such a big deal and doesn’t detract from the book. Just thought it would be useful people to know so buyers can avoid the surprise if theirs comes the same way. Also i’m not the biggest fan of the spine design and really wish that it was blank, without the little shapes because it really doesn’t fit with the beautiful simplicity of the cover, which is so elegant looking, as opposed to the spine which just makes it look like just another YA book on my bookshelf. But apart from that it’s a lovely book and wld 100% recommend.
I read this book with trepidation, because I was afraid it would gut me, emotionally. It did, and I am so grateful for it. I read this book in three sittings. In ten years, I have never read a book I was more immersed in. The vulnerability of these characters is sometimes hard to read, but makes you all the more eager to continue. If you are already a fan of this author, you might cry at the end, like I did. If you are new to her work, you might cry at the end. It’s understandable.
My life will be summed up in two parts: before reading this book and after.
This is my favourite book of the year and my favourite book since i began reading again 3 years ago, i related so much to both characters and the writing style is glorious.
I love when you find a good book, that captivates you. Before you know it you’ve lost yourself within the pages and can’t seem to put the book down until you’ve turned the very last page and yet you still want more.
