  • I have been a fan of these books since the first edition. I have distributed dozens of them to my classes teaching about ham radio. The new 4th edition includes much more information on every aspect of ham radio, making it a good reference to have on your bookshelf. I have been licensed for 62 years and I still learn from Ward Silver’s book. I highly recommend it
  • This book is very thorough and covers the entire spectrum of the topic. I thought I knew something about ham radio, due to the ability to pass the exam, but this book really provides a tremendous amount of information that I would otherwise have never known. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about learning ham radio.
  • Content is good, from very basic to more advanced. Arraigned well. Can be used as a reference type book.As is typical with all the “Dummies” series, the physical quality is somewhat lacking. Very flimsy cover and pages.
  • Husband was studying up for his ham radio license test and needed a source to cover all the basics. After trying books from the library I bought him this and he said it was the best book he had seen, very helpful and organized for easy reading and added resource and reference. All other books had been too disjointed and difficult to find needed info. Aced his exam with 100% correct answers.
  • Book covers a wide spectrum of the ham radio hobby. Easy to understand for a beginner, but with enough depth for the experienced ham.
  • Haven’t been licensed since I was a kid (novice). Although I’m an engineer, I wanted to get “up to speed” on the latest gizmos and tech in the Amateur Radio world. Good book!
  • Initially checked an older edition out of the library and read it prior to getting my ticket. I bought this significantly expanded and updated edition because of the wealth and breadth information it offers (and ease-of-reading, too). I’ve been a ham for years and still find new things to try after rereading this book. Highly recommended.
  • First and foremost I know zero to little about Ham. That being said, I found this book pretty useful. It has a lot of I formation throughout. For example, almost every topic it provides links for further detail or for study guides. It is a little repetitive but thats good for me because I’m pretty good at forgetting things. I accidentally purchased two and gave to a random friend to read and now he is talking about getting a rig.
  • This book is very informative loads of tips and answers a lot of questions
  • Written for the American market, but technically relevant to Hams worldwide
  • The basics are there. The author explains a lot of concepts at a “Dummy” level, which is entirely appropriate in this series of books. However, ALL of the licensing info is completely irrelevant for Canadians. It focuses on U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and requirements, and American Radio Relay League (ARRL) supports and examinations. We really need a book like this, or at least the licensing portion, for Canadian (and other) users.
  • This book is well written especially for those who are newly interested in Ham Radio.
