I wanted to be able to use this book while I was outdoors – working on some foraging projects in my yard and on hikes… SO, I got the spiral version – which was almost double in price but I figured it would be worth it since I would need it to lay flat …It does lay flat, and it’s a great resource but they literally punched holes down the entire book and put the spiral in – there are words that are cut off because of it. For the most part, you can figure out what’s said and read it fairy well – but it’s not a very professional appearance. It’s frustrating every time I come up to a reference and have to pause to put it all together like a puzzle.I need it for a course that starts this week too – so no time to return for the regular bound version, sadly. I have a few other texts which will be helpful too -and aren’t as frustrating to use. It’s a shame because this has a nice size to it too – could have been done a little better with the right binding…
I’m very happy with this book that I used throughout a 6-mo medicinal herbs apprenticeship; however, it’s not a book that can be used alone if you are looking to identify plants in the wild. The information is fantastic, the colorful pictures are beautiful, and I appreciate the method of organization (by flower color – very helpful!), but plants don’t stay in bloom all year long! Therefore, these plants can only be identified in the wild if they are in bloom, as the pictures do not include adequate photos of the leaves or non-blooming times. I definitely still recommend the book, just keep in mind that you may need some additional help.
Great little book, compact, and easy to read. Short, consise descriptions of plants and plenty of pictures. Some are missing pictures, which is noted in the book, so I just go online and look it up if I really need to. I’ve already identified several weeds in my backyard and learned that they’re actually useful! Would definitely recommend to someone who’s just curious (like myself). If you’re out there to actually collect and use the plants, I’d suggest to study up some more from other sources.
The books is full of useful information but I cannot open the pages. It’s too tightly wound and hard to get tot he inside of the page. This would have benefited from being bound in a coil, so you could open the pages to see the content.
I wanted a guide that would give me precise drawing of plants – as with most Peterson Guides but, it’s all photographs. I harvest wildflowers and plants for medicinal preparations. I need precise identification not someone’s picture; those abound in many other books. Very disappointed.
This little book is packed full of info! It is a must for anyone’s library that is involved with herbalism in any form. I still consider myself a beginner and there is so much to learn about nature’s gifts. Not only is it very helpful with identifying plants while foraging, there is some good solid info about each plants and some of it’s uses. Perfect fir a quick reference. The only thing that I feel is missing is a little map showing the common natural habitat areas such as you see in other field guides. But that is not enough for me to take off a star. Highly recommend for novelist such as myself as well as the more experienced.
Well, this is my first field guide book that I’ve purchased to take with me on nature walks, and I’m quite impressed! I just recently started my Herbalist classes and this is amazing and helpful! Peterson’s Field Guide to medicinal Plants has beautiful pictures, great descriptions, and uses of each plant.I would highly recommend this book as it includes trees, poisonous plants, etc.
after many dud purchases & looking for the right medicinal plant guide that was relevant to my area, THIS is the one. Amazing layout and organization, very useful plants that you’re guaranteed to have encountered, and great colored pictures. I love the idea of 2 index.. On for medicinal terms, one for plants. If you’re looking for the right book, look no more!
Excellent book I take it everywhere with me also bought another as a gift
This book is not a prescriptor, just a field guide. If I knew it, I would not buy it, but it was not mentioned in a description. The plants photographs are very small, often it’s just a part of a plant, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to use as a plant identifier.
Very DISAPPOINTED to learn ipon receipt that this is for Eastern & Central North America. I live in Western Canada…..
This is an excellent book for the information. It is very thorough. The photos are good small. Altogether it’s like putting two of my other field guides together into one. I love it.
Love this book! I’m learning so much!
