For Mike Hayes, flying started when he was 16 years old, and he has been flying for more than 40 years. He obtained his private pilot certificate in 1972 and acquired additional certificates and ratings in 1987. His aviation experience includes flight time in over 30 different types of aircraft, and the majority of instruction he has given has been in various models of Cessna, Piper, Mooney, Grumman, and Bellanca aircraft. He has been a flight instructor since 1988, instructing both full- and part-time for several large flight schools in Texas. Besides teaching, Mike has also worked as a corporate pilot and as a senior flight operations agent for a large regional airline. Prior to becoming involved in flight training, he worked for over 10 years in the telecommunications and information technology industry with extensive travel throughout the U.S. Mike is the author of ASA’s popular Oral Exam Guide Series for the Private, Commercial, Instrument, Multi-Engine, CFI, and ATP oral/practical tests. <div id="

  • I do think that this is the definitive book for anyone who wants to cover absolutely every base possible for their checkride. I don’t, however, find it a good solution to learn anything, and flipping through it is more of an exercise in “yea, I know that!” or “no I don’t”, and the only way to actually get an understanding of the subjects you don’t is to go to another resource. Whilst preparing for my checkride I attempted to get through this, but the fact that there are no pictures or diagrams makes it very difficult to remember anything.During my checkride itself, I found it much more helpful to reference the PHAK and my FAR/AIM with tabs in it than this. I was asked questions on aeromedical factors, for instance, and luckily I knew where that section was in the PHAK and the paragraph that discussed the types of hypoxia rather than the someone disorganized slew of questions and responses from this guide. In fact, the instant I received my certificate I gave this book away to a friend and gladly kept my PHAK in my own possession as this is rather useless to stay current or as a reference once you have your certificate. My recommendation as a whole: this is 2022, go watch checkride prep on YouTube or look up resources online whilst consulting your PHAK and FAR/AIM as paper resources. My checkride (this is all anecdotal and my experience only, of course) was not nearly as complicated as 80% of the questions in this book. If they are are good examiner, your DPE should pretty much only ask the really important questions from each section they have to pick from, and will not ask you something really obscure that this book covers and that you might spend a needless amount of time studying.
  • If you’re only going to do one thing to prepare for the checkride, it should be reading and noting this book. As opposed to more official study guides, this has a Q/A style layout that asks real, applicable questions that really make sure you know what you’re doing. Rote memorization is required for the checkride, but not much. This book does a good job of explaining what you need to just memorize, and all the other topics the fundamentals of actually understanding – so you don’t have to memorize, you can work through the question applying what you’ve learned.
  • I sat down to study today and I’ve already lost four pages! They just come right out, it’s insane. I’ll be three or four pages in when one just pops right out. It’s awful quailty
  • I passed the oral exam this week. This book of questions certainly helped me review most the requirements of the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards section I-Preflight Preparation. This includes sections I.A, B, C, D, F, G, and H, but I doesn’t address E (National Airspace System). E is mostly understanding all sectional chart symbology/text and their meanings so that’s easy enough to do on your own. But still a great resource for final oral exam prep.
  • Using this book to get ready for my upcoming check ride. It’s good however, it takes a very long time to get through. I am also more of a visual learner so what I end up doing is going through some questions and then looking up videos to get a visual image in my head of what I am actually reading about. Fly8my and Mzero are both very good youtube resources. The book does cover just about everything though. That’s why it takes so long to get through the thing.
  • Like the title says, the book is full of quality information, and is well presented – Im really enjoying reading it, and learning a ton.Less than fifteen pages into the book, doing nothing but reading it, and three pages had already fallen out. The simple act of opening the cover caused irreparable damage.I bought this to be a reference and study guide…and it it’s falling apart at the seams.Seems like it could have been made to last –
  • I will let you know after I pass my oral exam
  • Pages fell out.
