The international bestseller that transforms educators into teaching champions! Teach Like a Champion 3.0 is the revised, expanded, and up-to-date revision of Doug Lemov’s study of the craft of teaching. Upon studying videos of high-performing teachers, Lemov distills their methods into concrete tangible actions for others to use and adapt. Many of the techniques he describes are now part of the lingua franca of teaching, but here Lemov adds the results of his last five years of study, including new depth and detail to existing techniques and the addition of more than ten new techniques.Through the techniques, Lemov explains how to Check for Understanding, raise academic expectations, increase the ratio of the cognitive work students do, motivate and engage students, make classrooms more writing-intensive, improve discussions, and anticipate when it is necessary to redirect student behavior so it is positive and productive. In this edition, Lemov adds extensive discussions of research connecting the techniques more explicitly to cognitive and social sciences. He also updates his discussion based on extensive reflections on issues in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. These additions will help teachers to be clear on the why and the how behind their teaching decisions. • Before long, people are going to start posting reviews claiming that the techniques in this book are oppressive and racist. Don’t believe it for a second. Having adult authority in your classroom is the only option if you care about your students achieving any ambitious academic goals whatsoever. If allowing kids to simply blossom under their own brilliant and peaceful inner direction worked, we wouldn’t need schools, and our largely chaotic urban schools would be thriving. I have personally spent a lot of time in schools that use these techniques and use them well. They are not oppressive. Do adults (of all races) in these schools have a healthy sense of authoritative guidance with regard to students? Yes. Do students listen to adults? Yes. (Horror!)And I have seen more peace, pride, satisfaction, hard work, safety, and joy in learning in these classrooms than you will EVER find in the classrooms that flounder under misguided ideologies. If you want to relinquish adult authority in the classroom, you’ve got two choices: either go home every day exhausted and discouraged because the strongest personalities in your classroom are happy to fill the power vacuum your disconnected university professors set up for you (then quit within a few years, burned out and discouraged, like most early career teachers) OR come to excuse the resulting chaos, blame society, treat your students as victims, and stop caring about getting genuine academic results (academic results are racist, too!).The better option is to use the techniques in this book to become an adult: own your classroom, achieve phenomenal results, and do right by your students.By the way, you will see your relationships with students blossom when they respect you as an adult authority, and you will be able to hand back control to students in many respects. Your students will thank you for creating a safe and productive learning environment. Don’t listen to the nay-saying BS. Do what works.(Also ignore those who claim this book is just designed to “control black kids” or some such silliness. I have successfully applied these techniques in poor schools and affluent schools, high-percentage minority (mostly Hispanic) schools, and white-anglo suburban and rural schools. People are people. Every school in America should use these techniques.)
  • Not what i was looking for
  • This is the best version of Teach Like a Champion yet! What a pleasant surprise. I also love the ease of accessing the videos online and the blog that has a constant flow of “TLAC” 3.0 posts with video. Easy to learn techniques that improve teacher performance that benefits kids and sharing it with the world is so welcoming in these days. Good job Doug and team!
  • May as well light your money on fire.
  • This book contains 63 different strategies, all with the aim to make every student do what they need to do to get the best possible outcomes. If you look online, you can find thousands of strategies and ways to engage students; many of which compromise the teaching of a curriculum and promote low expectations of students. This book doesn’t do that. It gives strategies to enable the teacher to teach a academically demanding course, whilst increasing student accountability so that every member of the classroom is thinking and learning. It is to-the-point, concise and also gives you access to videos of the strategies being used in lesson.A must have for new and experienced teachers.
  • This is not a quick fix book. It’s definitely an investment. Honestly? I’m a little intimidated and wondering if it’s too much for me. If you’re really invested in yourself and your students I’d recommend it. It’s not what I thought it would be but it’s the road I am going down. I thought it would be more concise. Not to say there’s a lot of waffle, but there’s a lot of reading and reflection and participation and work. If you care about what you’re doing in the classroom then get it. If you’re not sure, then maybe start smaller. To me, this book is a commitment.
  • If your school follows the ‘Do Now, I Do, We Do, You Do, Exit Ticket’ system of teaching a lesson then buy this book.
  • Still working through thought provoking
  • Sums up the most recent and important research in teaching and learning.
