This is good for kids that like to do homework and are pretty sharp or for parents that want to explain each excersize. Not a lot of instruction. I like the variety and do mix it in for a change but the brain quest books are more fun and give GREAT instruction so kids can pick up and do things on their own. I wish brain quest had the little “activities” such as going outside or stretching. That part of this book is cool.
The kids hate doing these workbooks in the summer, but that’s fine by me. I’m not here to be their friend, I’m here to make sure they don’t forget what they learned during the school year over the summer. What I am not impressed by about these workbooks is the fact that on each and every single page, there’s something neither of my children encountered during the school year and NO explanation about how to do the assignment. Instead of three months worth of work (who lives in a system that provides three months off because that’s where I need to move to), it would be better for 10 weeks of work, adding in some sort of definition/teaching about concepts that aren’t routinely covered in the previous grade level. It would certainly make my life easier. As it is, the author/s assume the children know exactly what they are doing. I was hoping this would be more review, but I’m spending more time actually teaching. Next year, I’ll get a workbook that is all review to ensure the kids don’t lose knowledge, not this book that assumes they know new concepts.
I’ve been a teacher for over 20 years, and the Summer Bridge books are superb. They are well-written, focus on a variety of skills for students, and they are fun! There are science activities included, and they also have game cards at the back of this one. I’m quite impressed! The math concepts spiral throughout the book, and with the “15 minutes a day” emphasis, they offer a language component and math component for students to work on each day. They also have creative writing! And I love that the answers for the math and grammar are at the back of the book, giving students immediate feedback.
This is a great activity book to help keep your child stay mentally active when out of school for the summer. Over the years we have purchased a few different Summer Bridge books for our daughter. These books are not meant to be a full school curriculum, but instead a way to keep children mentally active during the summer break. Each summer we do our best to keep skills active and minimize the loss during the extended break. While we sometimes mix in other work to help her to increase skills, we are more worried about the atrophy that happens when not in school. It can be tough returning to school after 3 months without any schoolwork and we try to help her keep topics fresh without filling her summer with full days of ‘school’ work.As with other books in this series, this is a solid mix of skills with some being easy and others more of stretch. The difficulty level will likely depend on the schooling your child got during the academic year. I suspect most kids heading into sixth grade will find much of the work in this book at least a strong refresher and potentially give them a nudge in some areas. The exercises are organized to be a roughly 15 minute daily regime but you may decide to enhance it with other work if your child has areas that need more attention (i.e., add in more math or spelling activities). This book is not deficient in an area, we just occasionally add a little extra for topics that we feel could use a bit more work while still keeping the total workload to around 45-60 minutes per day. The Summer Bridge Activities book is a constant though with at least one page used almost every day and the other work rotated.
I bought this book for the first time over the summer and I am so happy that I did! We’ve noticed a huge difference in preparedness for school since using this work book. I bought on for my 6 th to 7 th grader and my 5 th to 6 th grader.I like how each day has four lessons that focus on different subjects. The lessons get progressively harder, but are very well thought out. Each day is designed to take about 15 minutes, so there’s not too much grumbling about doing school work over the summer 😀I’m very happy with this book and I’ll definitely be buying these again!
This is a good tool to keep the rust off the gears of bridging to the next grade. The only criticism I have is that one doesn’t always have the necessary resources to complete the task, for example, my son doesn’t have wifi access on a portable device to do the super exciting longitude latitude coordinates discoveries. (We waited until we got home to the computer for him to do that assignment.) But the assignments are very doable with 3 sections of 2 pages of assignments per day which helps pace and keep the interest. There are also physical breaks (do 30 jumping jacks) at the end of a section. Though the answers are available in the back (which I tear out and keep with me) there are not many examples shown which was tough on my lil guy for math. All in all I feel this is a worthwhile purchase to assist keeping the mindset of schoolwork glowing.
These workbooks are fantastic! Given the circumstances of the pandemic and online learning, all three of my children fell a bit behind this past spring. Since school has ended, we have been completing one lesson per day (weekend too!). At first it took 30-60 mins per day. Some of the content is more advanced, and some of it is brand new to them. But, all I can say is that along my kids will be prepared for the fall, if not a smidge ahead, giving them the confidence they need to start off strong for the new school year. I have recommended to all my friends! Excellent product!
I exchanged this for a Canadian curriculum book. I also found the activities rather advanced for the supposed grade level, while flipping through the book.
It appears to be a good summer review book with a lot of online support resources. There are even online math and reading comprehension downloadable books that can be used in conjunction with the workbook if I feel 1 page a day isn’t enough. There is easily 2 hours of work a day during the summer if I choose. I also like that it has references to online support in regards to grammar and social sciences. There were learning games apps available for the higher grades for summer bridge workbooks but now, no more. Kids are so accustomed to technology, it would have been nice to download an app for my son’s iPod so he could practice in the car or wherever.Overall, it looks like a good summer review book.
Great!
