These books (unfortunately I bought two, the K-1 and 1-3) do not show the gender article (el, la) with the noun. You cannot learn Spanish (or any latin-based language) without knowing the gender of a word. English speakers don’t know this and obviously the editors thought they were “simplifying” learning by omitting the gender articles. When learning vocabulary, it’s imperative to learn the complete word. In many, many other languages, that means learning the corresponding article which will then affect how you use the word in a sentence (the gendered endings of adjectives, etc., etc.). Don’t waste your money on this!
Background: I bought this for my 9 year old. Admittedly, she’s older than the recommended ages but she struggled so much with Duolingo and I wanted something to give her some confidence and enthusiasm. She doesn’t learn Spanish in school but she has a small amount of exposure elsewhere.Major ComplaintsThis book was way too easy. It would be more appropriate for a kid 4-6.No articles! It’s important for kids to learn la/el or un/una!No pronunciation! This is the biggest problem. There are so many pages where they are asked to read words aloud and then not told how to pronounce them. What is the point?!Tons of wasted pages. It’s a big book but half of it answers, flash cards, handwriting practice (?!) and other unhelpful things. The flash cards really annoy me. There are so many free apps and cheap actually durable sets. Why would you even print that? My kid would have spent more time cutting out all the cards than actually studying. There are something like 100!Positives:There are really easy exercises that are fun for kids (coloring, matching, etc.)It definitely renewed my daughters confidence. But it didn’t really teach her that much. She picked up a few words but not what I would expect from a book that size. And she certainly can’t put together a basic sentence. Overall, if you have a really young kid and you just want them to flip through and get familiar with words or something for them to color in the car, maybe buy this? The Color and Learn books are 10 times better and a quarter of the price though.
I would not recommend this for learning Spanish to become fluent. Given, Spanish was my first language, as it was for my children, so I come from a different perspective.-The book does have lots of fun activities but I am surprised at how many of those activities are in English. This was a let down. Also there is a lot of emphasis on writing the English translation for many of the activities. I feel this doesn’t push kids beyond their comfort zone- The vocabulary is incomplete. For example in the family section they go over mother, father, sister brother, grandparents. I would have liked to see uncle aunt and cousins. Same with the clothing- only 6 pieces of clothing. I think for a 1-3 grader more vocabulary would be more appropriate.- the titles to each section do not have translations- for example. The section on clothing never calls it ‘ropa’. The section on family never identifies ‘la familia’. I think this is partly because the book is written in English.-All the instructions are in English which is a shame. So much learning comes from instructions. The book is okay for just introducing Spanish to someone but would not recommend for learning. This is far from their claim to being a complete Spanish book.
If you are between this book and the Brighter Child and 1 more Spanish Workbook, Grade 2 (Brighter Child Workbooks), then get THIS one. It has every activity from the Brighter Child book and a whole lot more.As far as instructional level, my child just finished Kindergarten where Spanish was included in the curriculum and this book is a great review and give her additional support. The back of book has colored cards of all the words and numbers learned. There is also an answer key for all the activity pages.
This workbook is SO good! I am a native Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico but I married a white guy that doesnt speak a word in Spanish and it has been dificult for me to teach good Spanish to my 3 kids without having a full Spanish speaking house, but I still will not rest until all my kids learn good Spanish and this workbook has helped me to achieve that SO much! My daughter who is 8 LOVES IT! It has the instructions in English so my daughter can perfectly understand what is she being asked then it jumps into full Spanish. We go through the alphabet, the numbers and vocabulary every day then I have her to do the activities in this book and she loves it! She thinks its so entertaining! This is really really good! Highly recommend!
This is not a good way for kids to learn Spanish. There is far too much English in these books. So disappointing. Much too much English. Translating is not a good method for learning another language, especially when kids are young.I was under the impression that this was in Spanish. 80% of it is probably English. This is not a good way for kids to learn Spanish. Immersion is best and this should have had much more in Spanish. Nouns and a few verbs are not enough. The directions should also be in Spanish. I know that there are well-meaning parents who think this is a good idea for their kids but they’d be better off investing in an immersion program.
I am AMAZED by how much is covered in this workbook (especially for the price)! It has basics such as colors and numbers but gradually builds on them to provide an excellent foundation for literacy. I’ll mention a few of the highlights for me: Masculine and feminine words (including articles), formal and informal use of the equivalent of you (tu y usted), spelling practice, vocabulary flashcards (which could be used for various games), relationships, cutouts to create a book for each unit, and even a beautifully illustrated “Jack and the Beanstalk” bilingual story. I’m trying to figure out if there is an English equivalent for my nephews who live in Latin America. This one is for my six-year-old because I focused on teaching him to read English before introducing Spanish in a formal manner.
Brilliant workbook for learning Spanish lessons of exercises just to work through fab buy
My son loves this books. He looks forward to his lesson and the activities. And although there is a fair bit of repititon it is an excellent approach for retention of the information. I’m just sad there is not a follow on book
Very pleased with this, very easy to follow and will be a great help to teaching my daughter
Absolutely fantastic! Better than I expected. Colourful, fun, my 6 years old loves it and is really keen to learn, thank you.
Very useful detailed thick book
