300 pages later, this does not make any solid arguments for project management. It has been dumbed down to the point that it becomes an HR manual at first glance and superficial for serious project management dialog. My center of excellence will not be using this. It is an ok read for more advanced project managers seeking to broaden knowledge in Part 2 after PMP but there is not enough substance to ground those new to the profession or build solid structure on for either Agile or Predictive.
This book has lost the structure and some of the excellent content of previous guides. For example, the well-thought out Knowledge Areas for a Project Manager have just disappeared. Inclusion of some new aspects, such as emotional intelligence are good, but poorly organized. One must dig around for a particular subject. In addition, much of the book deviates from current textbooks and can lead to confusion. For example, the steps involved in risk management deviates from all other material and leads to confusion. POORLY done. I suggest it be rewritten, reorganized and republished.Karen Higgins, PhD.Adjunct Professor, Project Management, Claremont Graduate University
Much less daunting than v6…. which is literally 3x the information. New guide is much more relevant to today’s world of Project Management.
Received my hardcopy of the PMBOK Guide (7th edition). Major changes in terms of not only on the physical book (i.e. no of pages) but also the content. From process-based standard to principles-based standard. Obviously, changes also on the paper used in printing the book. It was quite a headache reading the 6th edition as it was printed on unreadable grey paper, using what PMI mentioned as “anti-counterfeit print technology”. This version is more reader-friendly and headache-free.
They got rid of the eye strain causing paper. Most points of information that could be are bullet points. The Standard of Project Management is at the front of the book instead of in back. They have also discovered color ink for some of the sidebars and diagrams. Overall a good update.
This guide is a generic set of principles that all projects should know such as all project should deliver value and PM’s need to be honest. Their is nothing new that is not common sense when managing a project. I don’t see any value when reading this guide. It has no description of how projects are conducted or processes they follow. While old PMBOK’s had process or a method to manage a project, this one has none. For example, if you never manage an agile project, you will never learn that in this book. I don’t recommend this to any new or experience PM’s. Waste of time. Read a good agile book or older pmbok.
I’ve been practicing for the PMP Exam for weeks. I was hoping this book, as it appears to be from PMI (same as my testing platform), would align with the practice test verbiage … it does not. There are dozens and dozens of terms, formulas, reference tables, etc. that DO NOT ALIGN with the exam questions. Additionally, I don’t see how this is the “latest” edition and a standard for project management if the most basic of items, i.e. “weak-matrix organization” isn’t even listed in the index of this book.I have come to the point where this book is sleeping in my desk as it’s not even worth me trying to see if I can refer to a definition or formula or structure breakdown … because I know I won’t find it.Worthless, happy I paid only what I did for it through Amazon.
I have received today PMBOK Guide in a very bad condition. Front page was ripped and torn. The book looks like it has been used before. Very disappointed.
Advertised as new. Arrived with food stains in it, clearly used before. Not happy, paid 45£ for a new book and this is what I get.
Not impressed with this book going to return. It says 365 pages only 278. Really. Not value for money.
The plastic wrapper that covered the book was torned and the book looked like it was thrown about. the print and paper quality was good, but it’s not worth 48pounds for this.
Had to return due to poor print quality.
A useful resource for effective project management.
